Hoe Down Theme

Planning

Backyard Barbeques are the quintessential summertime entertainment.  But to make it special, you look for something that will give it that extra something.  Or, perhaps, it's been a long winter and you're looking for something fun to bring a little summer to your winter?  Consider a Hoe Down.  This theme is light hearted, with a touch of silliness and familiarity that will appeal to everyone.  It's also a great Theme if you are mixing kids and adults or you are looking for "Guest participation" with a cook-off element which is a fun way to lighten your catering load and add diversity to the table.  Checkered table cloths, chili, bandanas and hitching posts - no matter where you are this is a Theme that you can create!

What is your "Party Picture"?

The inspiration for this Theme is the mid-west, dude ranch meets backyard barbeque.  Elements of inspiration include:  wagon wheels, leather, horses, denim, red and white check, red bandanas, cowboy hats, barrels, hitching posts, cattle skulls, mason jars, bails of hay, wrought iron and a little country music.  You can do this outside, or create a barn atmosphere in your home or a rented space.  A "cook-off" element allows you to request guest participation - corn break cook-off, chili cook-off, or even a "southern sides" cook-off will add to your table and reduce your costs and resources.  Get in the spirit and have a little fun, and even the most conservative of guests will enjoy this dalliance in cowboy times.

  • This is a great outdoor party, but you can also create a barn atmosphere inside - whether in a rented space, your home, or even a garage!
  • For a party that includes both adults and children, this Theme is ideal.  You can incorporate a lot of theme-related activities that will keep the children entertained as well as the environment and refreshments that will appeal to the adults.
  • Consider each of your senses when planning this party - the smell of the barbecue, bluegrass or country music in the background, denim and leather surfaces, etc.  You can completely capture the imaginations of your guests and transport them in this theme, which truly allows guests to let go and have fun!
  • Venue Note - If you are looking to have this theme off site, see if there is a farm nearby that allows party rentals.  Another option would be a quaint Inn with a great outdoor space.  An inexpensive option would be a local park or lake that has covered picnic areas - the exposed beams and picnic tables fit this theme perfectly!

Invitations

Communicating with your Guests

This Theme needs an invitation that immediately makes it clear you are taking your guests to the mid-west for some Chili and corn bread!  You can get really creative with this, just consider your inspirations.  A simple invitation with red and white check background and a stencil of an iron skillet is easy and inexpensive, or you can get a little more ambitious and roll up an invitation on rough paper with a red bandana tied around it.  Consider a mason jar with a red and white checked ribbon and a note card with party details.  How about a "Wanted" poster for each of your guests with a picture of your Guest of Honor as the subject and "reward" amounts for your cook-off items?  Have fun with this and your guests will be excited about the party you are planning!

Dress It Up

Decorations

This Theme can be as simple or as outrageous as you want to make it.  You can add just a few elements and let the guest's imaginations fill in the rest or you can go all out and recreate a barn dance in your space.  Exposed wood picnic tables or regular tables covered with red and white check, denim, or cowhide set the foundation.  Then add in wrought iron, a skull or two, some raw wood or branches and some cowboy hats.  Top off with details like mason jars at your bar (a "hitching post"), red and white checkered place seating cards with grommets, red bananas tied to each chair…   Your possibilities are really endless.

  • The colors for this theme are going to be red, white, black, denim, and the rich brown of leather.  Each of these colors evokes one of the elements of the Hoe Down.  The colors are simple, clean, and have a nice contrast!

Food/Drink

A Hoe Down speaks to nothing less than a barbeque!  Ribs, chili, brats, corn on the cob roasted on the grill, corn bread, baked beans and coleslaw…  It doesn't get easier.  Toss in some sweet tea and lemonade with iced cold beer for the adults and you have yourself a party!  This Theme calls for simple, but delicious food.  Have lots of bandana napkins on hand because it can also be MESSY!  Serve on platters and large bowls - family style of buffet is the way to go with this Theme.  Don't get too fancy or your food won't fit your theme.

  • Dirty Lemonade:  Roll and squeeze six lemons into a standard pitcher.  Add 3/4 cup sugar and a sprig or two of mint and mash together.  Fill your pitcher half way with ice then top with Sprite.  Add Vodka to suit.  This light, refreshing drink is the perfect compliment to a barbeque!

Entertainment

Entertainment for this party is pretty broad, and really depends on the age of your guests.  Bringing in a live blue-grass band or country band would definitely be a great addition.  Or have a cooking exhibition for grilling ribs and chicken - something most people would love to do, but don't necessarily know how to.  If you've got kids, consider pony rides, for the adults, if you want to go WAY over the top you can rent a mechanical bull!  There are simple activities that suit the Theme and will keep guests talking.  The judging of the cook-off (each item is numbered and guests vote for the best in your categories), a beer tasting is a great compliment to this Theme, and for adults and kids alike, consider a "shooting" competition with Airzookas and tin cans!

Prizes / Favors

Prizes and Favors

If you are having a competition you have to have prizes!  Consider a gift card to the best barbeque restaurant in your area, or a seasoned iron skillet, or a gift certificate for horseback riding at your local ranch.  What about a case of beer or a package of prepared ribs that need only be heated?   For party favors, a perfect option would be the Hoe Down essentials handed out at the beginning of the party - this could include bandanas, flannel shirts, and cowboy hats!
